i want to call the UK without having the 2.00 a minute show up on my phone bill. If I go buy a calling card, can I use it with my cell phone? Or do calling cards only work on landlines or payphones?

Most of the time depending on how long distance it is, it is easier to buy a calling card and use it at a phone booth. Less hassle and no worries after your trip. If you are normally out of town and have NO cellphone it is smarter to buy a prepaid minute phone. That way you will know how many minutes are on your cell, you can use it anytime (especially while traveling and driving) and in case of emergencies, dial 911. Hope that helps...

I live in the UK, and last time I bought a calling card I used the "local access" number from my land line. I live outside of Cardiff, so I thought calling Cardiff would be free. It wasn't and it cost me every time I made a call. Does anyone know a calling card to use from here, that I can use from my landline that won't charge me? Reply:calling cards are actually the cheapest methods to call India. Though we use Skype. It comes out costlier to use skype. About twice as much costly but the sound quality is good. For calling cards, i would suggest STi Phone cards. they are $5 dollars for a regular card and give you an hour of talktime. you can also buy them online with ur credit card.

Reply:He shouldn't need an international calling card. Just get a regular AT%26amp;T calling card. When soldiers are in Iraq, the phones call out just like he was in the states. Also get one that is rechargable. You keep the card and just give him the numbers off of it, so you can get more minutes on it when he needs them.

I'm traveling to Mexico and I want to purchase a mobile phone calling card once I arrive in Mexico. I hope to use it to make phone calls from Mexico to the United States while traveling. What are the rates and costs for these calling cards? Will they be cheaper then using Cingular's $0.99/minute International roaming?

I don´t think so. The international roaming here (MXtoUS) on Telcel (the cheapest) is a dollar a minut plus one more dollar of long distance. And because there is no legal fee stablished by government they charge you double and you can´t do anything.

If you want, you can buy a kit called Amigo Kit from 50usd aprox. but i recommend you to use it for SMS. Calls, just if it is very necesary.

Another option is to bring your own cellphone and use it with SMS and only very necesary calls.

I live in Canada and I make frequent phone calls to Asia and Europe. I have been using phone cards (or calling cards, such as CiCi, Asia Direct and Top) which I bought from a local convenience store. I recently learned about this software called Skype, which can make phone calls to landline phones. However, it seems that if I want to make international phone calls with it, I need to buy "credits". I am wondering which way will be cheaper for me -- using Skype or phone cards?

Hey Salma. If you are a Moroccan in USA wanting to call home on a regular basis the best thing to do is get a VOiP system and hook it up in Morocco. You can get an American phone number and have it connected (using dsl) in Morocco.

I am American living in Morocco and this is what I have. I have an American phone number based out of Florida. I can call my family back in the states just like I am next door to them.

To make a call on a calling card you will dial an 800 number to connect. There is no charge for the 800 number so it will not show up on your phone bill as you card is charged for the call. The card can be used anywhere, even with a pay phone.

Using them does not in any way mean you are trying to hide something... sometimes it is cheaper to use them.. you are at a friends house and do not want them to pay for your phone call, a lot easier if at a pay phone, etc.

By calling cards...you mean "prepaid" phones, which is when you buy as much money as you need for your phone and it has no contracts...There many different companies with a prepaid section, here are some names and the amount of minutes per card...

T-Mobile ($10 card for 30 minutes and so on)

Alltel (They give you a choice of pickin atleast 2 things for free and payin 4 the rest)

Verizon (same as T-Mobile)

Cingular (pay as you go $15 and up)

Virgin Mobile (prepaid company ONLY)

Tracfone (the phones arent as attractive but its still a prepaid company)

I know some prisons sell them to the inmates through the commissary but most jails strictly forbid them so I'd double check the information before I spent any money. As to Evercom, I'm afraid I know nothing but if they deal at all with correctional facility calls, someone here http://www.prisontalk.com knows how to reach them.

And note to the guy below...actually, calling cards are forbidden because A} they can be used as currency inside and B}The phone companies cannot make such huge profits with calling cards as with collect calls.

Reply:I don't think that you could use calling cards in jail. I think that all phone calls go through the prison so that they can record them. I am not for sure about this 100 percent though. I have a few friends that have been in prison and when they did call it was usually the prison operator when I answered the phone and they they had to connect me to the phone that my friend was on.

I've been doing some research but still have not found a question to my answer. I'm looking to start a calling card business. I want to produce my own calling cards and sell them to. Any ideas?

How to start a calling card business?
We own a small comercial printing company. If you want to act as a broker, you can hook up with one of these companies: 4over, Carlson Craft Business Solutions, Business Cards Tommorrow. All have web sites that are easy to find with a search. You will need to invest in a decent computer and desktop publishing software such as Corel Draw, Quark Express, or In Design to do the typesetting. You most definately will need to broaden your scope of product coverage from just business cards to also include envelopes, letterheads, forms, brochures, flyers etc. It would be helpful if you are a creative person, but if not, it won't take long to get a good working knowledge of the of basic layout and design. All of the wholesalers I mentioned above have sales kits with printed samples and ordering over the internet. They also have comprehensive pricing tools so you will not have to "fumble" around trying to price your customer. As far as producing them yourself, you must have a really, really, really good color laser copier that has a RIP (Raster Image Processor) which is also has an interface so that it will act as a printer for your computer. People get by with less, but their quality is the pits. You will need a business card slitter. I print cards 12 up, some people print them 10 up. Your slitter choice needs to accomodate one or the other. There is quite a bit more to learn....but this will get ya started!

Putting all the answers together. . .

Calling cards DO show up on your cell phone bill as the 800 # that you called and how many minutes you used during that call. Those minutes do count toward your limit.

But, it won't show who you called with that calling card. The only thing that'll show is the 800-XXX-XXXX number.

If you're trying to use a calling card so that the person that pays the bill doesn't see who you are calling, then this will be a great way to do it. They won't know who it is that you're calling.

But if you are trying not to use your minutes up by using a calling card, then this is not going to work. You'll still use up your minutes. But I have a feeling that you don't care about this option. You are more concerned about concealing the phone number of who you are calling.

Don't be seduced into buying the "cheapest" card or the card that offers the "lowest" rates. Often times, these cards have connection fees. weekly maintenence fees, and charge up to 20% taxes on every phone call. In addition, many cards bill a minute as or 4 minutes.

It depends on how you're gonna use it. I f you plan on makiing one long call, go for the lowest rates and use all the minutes up.

If you plan on making several calls, go for the cleanest card -- the one that has the least amount of fees and taxes.

When i traveled abroad i took an AT%26amp;T Cellular phone. It was a small phone that I purchased with the smallest package, but I placed an international package on the cellphone. As logn as that cellphone you purchase is international, you can pay a special rate. You can find this information more indepth at any AT%26amp;T cellular phone store. It is easier than taking a regular phone with a sim card. With tighter security restrictions, people traveling abroad can only purchase a Sim Card if they have a citizen of that nation with them. (This is something that happened to my best friend!!!) WIth the Iphone, you may be entitled to those international rates. Make sure to check with your Wireless Company first.

I don't think it works that way. For one thing, verizon uses CDMA on their phones which is not supported in europe so you won't be able to use your phone at all. The advice I always read about is getting an unlocked GSM phone and buying prepaid SIM cards.

Then it says rates are higher to call a cell phone (which is what I would normally do, to a friend in one of the cities where landline rate is 12.5). On a home phone bill, it only list any long distance calls that your house has made. So if you are using a calling card and the number is toll free and not long distance then it won't appear in the bill at all.

A couple months ago, I received a call from a debt collector regarding a card that I haven't used in 10 years wanting to collect on a balance that I was told back then was written off (from the credit bureau) due to my illness at the time. I was literally in shock. Not sure what to do about it since I no longer have the card or any statements since it's been 10 years. Please Help if you know of anything I can do. Thanks!

It is past the statute of limitations. They cannot collect.

The statute of limitations is different in every state but the longest one I know of is 6 years.

Basically, just tell them you don't owe it. There is not a thing they can do about it. After the statute of limitations runs, they cannot get a judgment against you so the bill is noncollectable. The reason they call people after 10 years is that most people don't realize this and if they can get anyone to agree to pay them even a dollar, the statute of limitations starts all over again.

Do not give them money. Do not agree you owe it. Do not tell them you will pay them anything.

Tell them you do not owe it. Period. Tell them the statute of limitations has run on it and tell them not to call again.

Go to the FTC website and look up your rights under the Fair Credit act.

These collection agencies purchase old debt, most of it is actually uncollectible but if they can get someone on the phone and rake them over the coals for about 10 minutes, and get them to agree to settle the debt because the person doesn't know their rights and that they really don't owe it, they will and they make money doing it.

If that debt is 10 years old, it is no longer on your credit report. If you pay them a dollar, you have just renewed the debt and it will go back on your credit report for another 7 years. Go get a copy of your credit report from all three credit reporting agencies. (link below). If it's not on there, it's uncollectible as they drop everything off after 7 years anyway. Be careful what you say to them on the phone. In fact, don't even talk to them. Tell them to send it to you in writing because you're disputing it anyway and hang up. Those guys are total jerks and will do anything to get you to say you owe it so they can renew the debt.

Reply:If it has been around 10 years since you first became 30 days late and never brought the account current leading to the charge off you may be past the collecting statute of limitations (SOL) on that account.

You would definately be past the reporting SOL. If they place it on your credit reports it would be reaging the debt and illegal and MUST be removed.

If the collection agency failed to mail you a letter concerning the account within 5 days after the first call to you, that is also a violation.

Send the collection agency a debt validation letter. Send it certified mail return receipt. Do not sign the letter, initial it or just type your name in (signatures have ways of jumping onto other papers) Keep copies of everything.

IF you are out of the collecting SOL, when you receive a validation attempt from the collector or 35 days have passed since they signed the green card, whichever comes first, send them a SOL letter. You can find a SOL letter template on a link on the main page of the link I put in above.

Reply:First thing to do, check your credit report. If it is on there, dispute it. If they refuse to remove it, then add a letter to your credit file explaining what happened. I would not pay it. It is over 10 years old. And they told you that it was written off. Usually written off means that they sold it to someone else to try to collect but your case may be different. Either way, I wouldn't take another phone call from them. It is over 7 years, don't let it stress you.

1) If you make few infrequent calls choose a no-fee card, often called clean-card or no-mainteneance-card, without expiration date.

I'm going to France in a few weeks and I'm interested in buying a calling card, so while there, I can make some calls home [the USA].

However, I've never used a calling card before and while I've searched on the internet...they all seem the same to me. And I'm not sure which services are legitimate and which aren't.

For anyone with experience using a calling card abroad, can you please recommend which to use? I'm going to have to use it on a payphone there, not my cell phone.

You can usually buy really cheap phone cards once you get over there (like 5 Euros), but if you're using a pay phone they'll only last a few minutes, whereas you could get 100 minutes from a landline or cell phone.

There are lots of (in Germany, atleast) Phone Cafes, where you buy a phone card and use the pay phones that they have in their store, so you're minutes don't get drained so fast. It's the best deal if you don't have any other phone.

Otherwise, try talking with your cell phone company to see if you can get a different SimCard for your phone that allows you to call overseas. I've never had one but I know some other people who did and they said it's a really good deal if you plan on being gone for a while.

If you are the one calling or using the card to call others:

If you mean an international calling card (and it has been prepaid), then no, you can't get a statement of the charges or the activity and numbers dialled. They don't keep records on that since it isn't accumulating charges, but decreasing a balance.

As for your phone company, these will not show either as long as the number to connect it a local number or a toll-free number and you are using a landline. It *may* show on your cell statement depending on your carrier/provider though.

If you are the one receiving calls made from the card and want to know the number or identity of who is calling you:

These can not be traced...and even if you were lucky enough to know which card was used the company couldn't tell you ....sorry. :(

My mom constantly makes calls to Mexico to talk with her family (my aunts) and she buys these calling cards called Bonita Señorita which translates to Pretty Lady. They supposedly give her like 11hrs of talking time for 5 bucks but only put out about 2hrs and 30mins, I wanted to know which long distance calling cards (to Mexico) are worth buying and actually give you the talking time it advertises?
