What is the best way for Military to call from Iraq to USA? Calling plan suggestions Phone cards? Need Advice?

Hi my husband is in the Marines and deploying to Iraq next week around the 16th does anyone know of a phone service that you deposit money to pay into for a card with minutes where they give the soldier a pin # to call home? You get minutes by the money you had payed in. He said something like Spyware or something, but i cant find any online info for it. Any suggestions on a phone company that does that or any good calling cards that you have had experience with? Know any companies that donate phone cards to the military? Thanks alot, Amber

What is the best way for Military to call from Iraq to USA? Calling plan suggestions Phone cards? Need Advice?
AT%26amp;T has the contract to provide phone service from Iraq for both military and civilians. They have calling center/internet cafe places on every base. The ones for the civilians have been connected via satellite to the home office in the USA so the calls are charged to the ATT phone cards as domestic calls.

The military calling centers haven't been connected by satellite and the phone cards are hard to obtain through the px's on the base. When they are available they are very expensive. The familys have to buy the phone cards in the US. These domestic cards are then charged with international rates so a 300 minute card is only good for about 90 minutes worth of calls.

Some of the bases have a program where the chaplains are getting AT%26amp;T cards donated so they are available to the members of the military whose familys can't afford the cards. This to me is a very bad system -in every other war zone in history-the military had free phone calls home. AT%26amp;T is making a fortune off our military and their familys.
Reply:The other answers are all great, but find out if he will have frequent computer access. During his 4th tour, my hubby was lucky enough to have frequent computer access so he used Skype to call home.
Reply:When I am away from for TDY or deployments I buy phone cards at the local AAFES, they are probably the best for the money. Phone cards are also donated by civilian organizations and businesses, however I don't know how to get hold of them.
Reply:HI there, yes I have both son over there right now.. the cards you want are the SPAWAR cards. go to the site and open a new account, then you can buy the minutes he will need. check out the rates also..

It is 4 cents a minute and what both son's use.. They have a special secured phone in the internet cafe's where they can use them.. Thank your husband for his service Ma'am..

Reply:Depending on where he is going to be stationed, will depend on the best course to take. There are phone centers at most military bases in Iraq. However, you tend to have to stand in line waiting and then you might only get a few minutes to talk at a time. When I was in Baghdad, I was able to purchase a cell phone and charge it with minutes. It allowed me to call home and anywhere else I wanted to. It wasn't the most cost effective. About 30 cents a minute.

If he has a lap top computer and internet access (which is possible, but not as reliable as we have here in the states), then he can use Skype, or NetZero Voice. I used both of these, and for about $15 a month you get unlimited international calling, and you also get your own phone number. It is a good alternative, when the internet is working well.

The last suggestion, and one I did not try, is a satellite phone. These are expensive, and the monthly bill is outrageous, but it is the most reliable and can be used almost anywhere in the world.
Reply:You can try this one ATT card:

Calling Cards from the US to a Spanish Cell phone?

I am looking for a calling card or plan that has good rates from the Continental US to a Cell phone in Spain.

Try these phone cards http://www.phonebell.net/p/?id_from_coun...

Good luck!
Reply:I use Golden lotus, its only 8.3 c/min to cell in Spain, very good quality

derect link: http://www.masterdial.net/p/buy.php?idco...
Reply:That is about right, unfortunately. Many countries in Europe tax inbound cell phone calls.

There are five-dollar prepaid cards you can buy at your local dollar store, convenience store, or liquor store. There are posters by the counter which tell you how many minutes you would get for five dollars, and most of them to a cell phone in Spain will equate to about 10- to 15-cents per minute.
Reply:n2wiceover,

That rate is not bad if there are no additional fees. However, if you are looking for a cheaper rate/min, here are two cards you can consider.

The first is a low rate card called the Fast Track with a rate of 10¢/min (US to Spain cell phone), which has a maintenance fee. Use the card in one call to avoid the fee.

The second card is called the Aries, and has no additional fees, plus is rechargeable with a rate of 12.5¢/min (US to Spain cell phone). This is probably the best bet, but you have to be the one to decide which card is best for you.

Just make sure you compare "apples to apples" when looking at phone cards. Many times, the low rate cards are packed with fees.

Happy calling!
Reply:Calling from USA to Spain cellphone, the best rate is 8.3 cents / min with maintenance fee, or 17 cents / min without maintenance fee.

Check http://www.eecalling.com/p/?id_from_coun... to compare and find the best calling card for yourself.
Reply:Good luck! The calling cards seem to have one rate for landlines in Europe and another (much higher!) rate for cell phones. The best thing is to get them to call you, because they can buy super-cheap calling cards over there and call you, whether you're on a landline or cell phone. But, perhaps somebody else will know of one. I'll check back later to see!

Are there international calling cards for the Philippines?

I'm visiting the philippines from the US. are there calling cards i can buy in the states or philippines to call the US for cheap? and if you happen to know how much, that would help also... thanks for your input.

Are there international calling cards for the Philippines?
You can buy the PLDT Budget card with Php100 and Php200 denomination. The rate is Php3/min or roughly 30 min for a Php100 card.

The card can be bought at any 711 or mini stop stores and other establishments since it is quite popular here.

Just make sure to inquire whether the phone that you are using is a PLDT phone, but I don't think you have to worry about it since 80% of the phones being used here are PLDT lines.

Another thing, you may encounter some problems accessing the card if you are staying in a 5 star hotel because they tend to divert the calls to force you to use their services which are so sky high expensive. Otherwise, this card is very convenient and way way cheap.
Reply:yeah, pldt cards...and don't worry about the thumbs down...it's just a bad habit of some ppl...have fun in the philippines
Reply:You can try this card out.
Reply:better buy pldt budget card here at three pesos per minute.

no need to bring one from america.

What is the best deal on International Calling cards for Military/Iraq?

I am looking for some good prices on calling cards to send my husband in Iraq. He is in the Military. Anyone know of any?

What is the best deal on International Calling cards for Military/Iraq?
Yes, go to the post office and ask the counter person about getting calling cards for your husband from the VA.

Each chapter has a person that is in control of sending calling cards, for FREE, to the men and women in the service. Your husband will have to contact this person....so it will take a bit to get them to him....but its worth it because they are free.

I found this out when I was sending packages to various soldiers that I'd found on line, wanting packages. They will give him as many as he wants, but he will have to be the one to contact them...so get the name and address of the person that handles them and send it to him.

While waiting, I'm honestly not sure which is the best. I went to Costco and got calling cards. I thought they would be the easiest because I can add money from here onto them....but I've never heard back from the Men I sent them to....about wether they worked or not.

Good luck and God bless Your Husband and the Men and Women of the Services!
Reply:My husband is stationed in Korea and we use pennytalk. It is 1 cent a minute. I am not sure what the calling rates are for Iraq but they are usually cheap.

www.pennytalk.com

I pray for our soldiers every night. And I hope your doing okay as well. Hold in there!
Reply:Either pennytalk like she said or through yahoo messenger there is a phone out option you can call a cell or computer whichever works for the situation...I am pretty sure its around 8 cents a minute to iraq...

Good luck and make sure you tell them we love them and thank you for all they do..

Can you use calling cards with a cell phone?

I mean pre-purchased long-distance or international calling cards with which you dial an access number first, and then your destination number.

Can you use calling cards with a cell phone?
Yes you can but keep in mind you will still be using your local airtime minutes. All the calling card will do is avoid the long distance charges. So, depending on your usage and compare the long distance rates with your cellular service provider, using the calling card may be more economical for you.
Reply:Sure. You can find many cards like that. You will use your local airtime minutes. The calling card is much cheaper than cellphone company's long distance charge, even add your local airtime charges together.

Reply:Sure you can. When i was working in the US, a friend recommend viapin.com, that is a company that sells international calling cards, I used it and work fine from a cell. OH and a extra thing is that there is no aditional cost.
Reply:Yes, you can. Calling cards are universal. It's important, what fees are charged and how long is a rounding period. Main, try to choose a calling card which has no or low connection/maintenance fees and low rounding period. For details and purchasing calling cards on-line go to International Phone Card Review
Reply:Yes they work perfectly with cell phones. I have used several brand names and use them all the time to call South America and Europe. Tip: Don't forget to dial # after your destination number it will connect you quicker.
Reply:Drako told you right u will be using your minutes up costing you both ways some calling card will have an additional charge i bought one at wal mart international and it has an 80 cents charge initial call for every call using my cell
Reply:yes, I do!

Do calling cards and the 496 STD free calling work on Reliance life time plan?

I want to convert to the Reliance life-time (Rs.199) plan. But I want to know whether the All-India calling cards like Rs.225/280/675/875 and the recently inroduced Rs.496 free STD facility would work on this plan? I have a Mumbai pre-paid connection. Also, how to get out of the life-time plan and switch to a regular plan if one wants to? Thanks for help.

What are the most affordable Internet Calling cards?

I want to distribute internet calling cards to local residents. It's very expensive to make long-distance calls with our phone service provider. I'd rather not use alternatives such as Yahoo Voice; I am strictly looking for Internet Calling cards. Thanks for any source.

What are the most affordable Internet Calling cards?
i call korea from hawaii and the phillipino phone cards are usually the cheapest.
Reply:Advice #1 Screw Skype. It is costly. Yup. Costly.

Now, depending on where you are - choose from the following:

Globe7.com (best voice quality, CHEAPEST RATES, and lowest denominations - as low as $2 available. Also, if you watch their video ads, they give half a cent per minute of video ad watching, free. So, say if you watch a video of 6-7 min...you have enough credit to make an international phone call. Keep watching more ads and you get enough, so that you don't pay for yer phone calls anymore. Or, if you wanna pay - you still can. It is still a hell lot cheaper as compared to Skype.

2nd option:

Free PC-2-Phone calls to over 45 countries - but you still gotta recharge, at first, for (10euros) - cuz not every country is free. Also, to call the free countries, you'll need to recharge and keep some money in yer account.

Here: http://www.internetcalls.com

Download the messenger, recharge with yer credit card, and the voice quality matches SKYPE - I love it! And you get yer own free phone-in no. which SKYPE charges like (30 dollars) or so for - Yahoo! charges some (3 dollars) - here it is free.

You'll be surprised - just like I was - itz awesome.
Reply:A lot depends where you are calling from.

For calls from USA and Canada I suggest to look at Nobelcom http://www.nvcards.com/ or SpeedyPin http://www.primevote.com/SpeedyPin.htm

For calls from UK one of the best choices is 1st4phonecards http://www.firstforcards.com/

For calls from Latin and South America I would go with Cloncom http://www.prismlongdistance.com/
Reply:i think it is perfect 2 call cards cause i am calling 4rm kwt 2 irland and it is so clear that it sounds like ur taking face2 face.

How can I donate pre-paid calling cards that I have to a worthy cause?

I have found sites to donate money towards buying calling cards for soldiers, but I want to donate two calling cards that I already own that I have not used. Thanks!

How can I donate pre-paid calling cards that I have to a worthy cause?
That's a really cute idea. I would ask the Red Cross if they have any suggestions. If you know of a school or church that has soldiers fundraisers just put it in the bin. You are a wonderful person. Good use of resources.
Reply:Take them to a recruiting station in your area. Army%26lt;Navy%26lt;Marine%26lt; Air Force your choice. They will send them out to some one who needs them.If you don't want a soldier to have them then take them to your local food bank and some needy family or drifter will get them to stay in touch with family.

What organization collects calling cards for troops?

I am trying to find a charity or group that accepts calling cards and sends them to troops overseas. Every year at my daughter's birthday we collect items to donate to some charity. I want to do something for the troops this year. I don't want to collect money and I thought calling cards would be great. However I can only find charities that allow you to purchase the cards online. Time is running short and I NEED HELP! Are there any groups that will accept the cards? Are there any other groups that collect any kind of items to send? THANKS!!!
