How do calling cards work?

if i buy a calling card for example $20.00 ....do i get charged per minute while i use it?

How do calling cards work?
Pre-paid phone cards sometime know as "calling cards" are purchased in denominations, such as $5, $10, $20, or in other available denominations, or in other currencies such as sterling.

When you purchase this card, the card is pre-charged with a value of call credit which is usually the same as that of the card value. (Sometimes cards may give extra value such as a $25 for $20).

Callers can then use the card to call from almost any touch tone telephone to call either domestic (local) or International.

Because cards are pre-paid, phone card producers are able to purchase 'minutes' in bulk from line carriers such as MCI, WorldCom, Deutche Telecom, BT, etc. Purchasing in bulk means savings, and these savings are passed onto the phone card user. Typically, on international calls, callers can save over 80% over a standard dialing service, and in some cases over 90%, thus making phone cards a very attractive method for calling abroad.

Phone cards are then generally supplied to phone card resellers.

Normally first line customer services are supplied by the card operator, details of which are normally sent with the order. As the physical card is not needed, many orders are now made via email or over the phone. The phone card resellers then send details to the customer, the details would normally include :-

Access number (s)

PIN number (s)

Customer Services telephone number for that specific card

Usage instructions
Reply:The card will be reduced by the cost of the call which will vary on the rate established which is on a per minute basis. For example, if the rate is 5cents per minute and you speak for 30 minutes, that call will cost $1.50 . You will have $18.50 left to use ($20-$1.5)
Reply:yes you still get charge, and you can get it from phone stores or walgreens, jewel osco.
Reply:Most stores have them. Look at discount stores such as Walmart or Sam's Club. Hoever you will always get better prices when you by on-line.
Reply:there is usually a fee taken out for using the card then it is per minute...they are really a rip off
Reply:A phone card can be issued by a phone company, or by a reseller(BlackStone) that buys network access from as stablished phone company (SWB). The phone card is nothing more than an account number with a toll free number attached to it. Wholesale minutes in the US 48 are less than one cent a minute, and usually resold between 2.0 and 3.6 cents per minute, depending on the market. The card issuer may want to recover access fees and taxes by adding these fees as a "maintennace or usage" fee that the customer pays above the cost of the minutes used ( that is why some 60 minute cards only last 45 "talk " minutes).

Computers do most of the work: the toll free number you dial initially to enable a card, starts the account and will count the minutes down as they are used. Most cards have an expiration date between 90 days and one year. International cards work the same: we can purchase, say minutes to Mexico City for less than 3.5 cents ,a nd resale it from 4 to 7 cents a minute. Since we know the average talk time to Mexico city is 6.7 minutes per call, and the average Mexico card lasts 7 days, I know how many cards I can expect to sell in a given market.
Reply:most calling cards Ive heard of charge by the min but you should read the back of the card to find out for the pacific card you have they will say like $0.05 per min or something
