Can you use a calling card on a cruise?

I am planning for a cruise and I was wondering if you can use a calling card from the phones in the rooms. I will be traveling with Royal Caribbean cruise lines. I know that you can use their phones to make calls but it costs almost $8.00 a minute. Any information would be appreciated.

Can you use a calling card on a cruise?
Yes, you can use calling cards on the cruise ship. To find more information go to the site below or contact your local travel agent.
Reply:Boy, that would be a great idea. However, the answer is NO.

The cruiselines have you by the short and curlies when it comes to making phone calls from the ship. It is around $8 per minute plus a set-up fee. No calling cards can be used.

Their Internet rates for email is just about as expensive. You are charged around 75 cents per minute or you can buy a package of 30, 60, or 100 minutes and the per minute rate goes down slightly.

You can also wait until you get to a port and make your phone calls using a calling card when you are on shore. You can also find very inexpensive Internet shops to access your email. I used one in Mexico at the rate of $1 per hour. I was on it for a half hour and was charged 50 cents. I bought a beer with the other 50 cents.
Reply:tbugs is right, you will be held by the short %26amp; curlies while you are on the ship. Many of the cruise ships have started having a cell installed on them called Cellular@Sea, it works with many of the cellular carriers but still is a per minute charge ($2.99 for Sprint), that may be an alternative to you.
Reply:no
