Calling a UK cell from a cell phone or calling card?

I used a calling card to call a UK call phone from my US land line and got far less minutes then the phone card promised. I used it all on one call. When I called customer service they said something about taxes and surcharges. Does anyone know what they are talking about? Are these fees also charged when you call from your cell phone or landline or just when you use calling cards? I can't figure out the cheapest way to be making these calls. Any advice is appreciated.

There are usually fees and such with using phone cards.

You can see variety of different calling cards to UK with rates as low as 6.7c/min at ZS Comm Global. The phone cards with the cheapest rates require you to use local access numbers instead of the toll free access.

Reply:when you are using prepaid calling cards you are saving about 70% on average. so even if you being charged connection/maintanance fees, you are sill saving LOTS of money.

go to this website: http://www.dialworld.us

they explain charges that you will have for each card you buy. and you will know what to expect and how much rate will be.

I use it all the time
Reply:Probably your calling card had some fees. Maintenance fee is charged to maintain services. Connection fee is charged anytime there is a connection. Long talking fee is charged if the phone call goes beyond a specified duration. This duration is usually around 20 minutes. In total you got far less minutes than the phone card promised. It isvery cheap
Reply:Tel3 http://www.tel3com.com/ has a rate 17 c/min without any other taxes or surcharges.

Overall calls to cell phones are much more expensive than to a landline. The same 17 c/min cell call costs only 2.5 c/min if a call is to a landline.

Reply:Calls to cell phones in Europe are more expensive than to the landline. Make sure to buy a card that offers the lowest cost without surcharges. The best type of cards are cards created specifically to call cell phones like "Talk United Kingdom Cellular" at 11.4 c/min or "Call UK Cellular" at 13 c/min. See http://www.nvcards.com/ for details.
Reply:Yes, I know.

1) Taxes will be applied to every minute you call. I.e. they say calling rate is 10 cents / min and tax is 15%, then the charged rate is 11.5 cents / min.

2) Surcharge. There are some surcharges, like connection fee, maintenance fee.

Connection fee will be charged every time the call is established.

Maintenance fee will be charged some time regularly, the first charge is within 1 day after your first call, the subsequent charge period will be 1 week or 2 weeks depending on calling card company.

3) Rounding. It is a factor to affect your calling minute.

All these surcharge rules can be found on the post of calling card. If you buy online, you can find them on the website.
