Is it true that you can't use a calling card with a cell phone?

My boyfriend is going to Europe for six months. He has updated his cell phone to work over there (roaming). We planned to stock up on calling cards for him so that we could keep in touch. But, someone said that a calling card wouldn't work on a cell phone. Is that true? If yes, what are our options?

Incase you both have internet access you might want to look into setting up Skype accounts. It allows you to call each other for free!
Reply:I don't believe there is any problem using a prepaid calling card with a cell phone. It is just an 800 number. The problem would be using the prepaid card from Europe. There is no 800 number to call.
Reply:True, it uses cell phone minutes, and phone card minutes, AND roaming. Ask your service provider what plans they have for your situation. Or tell him to use a phone card from a phone over there. My friends husband got a $7000 phone bill for using his cell phone in japan for 7 months. When my husband was in Japan, we both got laptops and the internet and just used Yahoo! Voice. We probably talked for 200 hours or more total, and it didn't cost us a penny.

Cell phone companies charge (use minutes, and charge if you go over) for 800 numbers, call one and look at your bill.
Reply:No. You can use a calling card with a cell phone. Long distance charge will be deducted from your prepaid international calling card, and the cell phone will use airtime.
Reply:just call on a telephone
